If there’s one thing stoners are excellent at, it’s using their creative minds to come up with new and exciting ways to consume cannabis. Whether by toking on some carefully cultivated green, dabbing on some fine cannabis extracts or sprinkling some of that sweet-smelling, sandy kief atop a fresh bowl, there always seems to be a way to one-up the last decade’s weed game.

Today’s top shelf cannabis product is actually a careful combination of three tried-and-true favorites: high-quality bud, carefully extracted cannabis concentrate and a generous dusting of potent kief to wrap it all up. “Moon rocks” as they are often called (or “caviar” in some cases) are perfect for connoisseurs or for those just looking to try out a swanky cannabis product.

What Are Moon Rocks

Whether he was the first to create them or whether he just made them popular, moon rocks became famous in 2015 when rapper, Kurupt, launched his trademark product, Kurupt’s Moonrock. Originating as a way to pump up the popular cannabis strain, Girl Scout Cookies, Kurupt soaked this potent hybrid strain in hash oil made from the same strain. Once saturated, the buds are then rolled in kief and set on display for the next envious consumer.

Example of a Moon Rock
Not only are moon rocks potent but they’re also quite visually appealing with their generous kief coating.

Another common name for moon rocks is caviar, though it’s important to note that they are not technically the same thing. Essentially, caviar is the same thing as moon rocks minus the generous kief coat. Though the terms are often interchangeable, if you want real moon rocks (well, the kind that’s made here on earth), make sure they’re coated in kief.

How to Smoke Moon Rocks

Moon rocks are a luxury. They are not intended to be broken up in a grinder (lest you lose good stuff to the teeth of the grinder, and shouldn’t even be ground in your fingers, either. Instead, moon rocks should be packed lightly into a bowl or bong (or mixed into a blunt or joint if you really want to get high), by shaving off small pieces with a razor or manicure scissors.

Be careful not to pack your bowl too tight and keep it tilted away from the mouth piece to avoid clogging the pipe – the bud will be very sappy, after all, and a lot of the oil will likely run down your piece.

Using a dugout or simple ice pinch can minimize how much oil is lost.

Finally, be careful not to go too heavy your first time consuming moon rocks. Even seasoned smokers like Snoop Dogg have claimed that moon rocks are too powerful so start with one puff and savor it as long as possible. Notice how the flavors differ between the inhale and exhale, how the smoke fills in your lungs, throat and mouth, and how the sensations wash over you. Indulge in every moment because the moments spent consuming moon rocks are intended to be fully enjoyed. If you’re feeling especially creative (which a potent GSC sativa hybrid tends to do), jot down some notes about your experience or share your strain reviews online.

Spotting Moon Rock Imposters

Moon rocks are something to be appreciated, both by the seller and the consumer. If your budtender is vague on the details of their moon rocks, they may not be all they’re chalked up to be. Some dispensaries may try to pawn off low-quality or over-stock bud by coating it in mediocre oil and (maybe) a slight dusting of kief – but real moon rocks are something else.

Example of a Quality Moon ROck
Be wary of impostors and only purchase quality moon rocks!

Quality moon rocks should look like they’ve been rolling around in a whole bucket of kief – the thicker the coat of trichomes, the higher the quality of moon rock (remember, if there is no kief, you’re more likely looking at caviar, not moon rocks).

Moon rocks should also be very pungent. Trichomes (kief) contain a huge amount of terpenes that should fill your nostrils with the first whiff.

“Fake” moon rocks will have a faint or subtle odor that may not be worth the price.

Quality moon rocks should be thoroughly saturated in oil. Proper procedure for creating moon rocks requires that oil be brushed into the buds multiple times, allowing time for the oil to saturate thoroughly into the dried bud between applications. Though this is a quality you will not discover until after purchase, it is a valuable point to note when considering your next moon rock purchase or recommendation.

You know what’s even more fun than getting high? Getting really, really high. That’s what happens when you smoke moon rocks: the latest, tastiest treat in the cannabis scene. With the ability to take consumers to the moon and back without ever leaving the couch, moon rocks are truly out-of-this-world.
