It never fails. The sack of weed that was supposed to last all pay period inevitably disappears long before. Although I could always go out and buy more, my wallet rarely allows for it, so there has to be another way.
Rather than scrape bowls for resin or dip into my fast food fund (yes, I have a whole fund for fast food -- leave me alone), I’ve come up with a few creative ways to stretch my marijuana stash. Feel free to use them, too!
1. Follow dosing instructions
All forms of cannabis come with suggested dosing instructions: 10 mg of cannabinoids for edibles, a single hit of concentrates and one to two hits for flower. If after a few minutes (or hours in the case of edibles) a sufficient high has not been reached, then it's okay to take a second dose, but you may be surprised to learn that a few minutes is all it takes to feel those few hits after all.
2. Carefully select your smoking device
Joints and blunts are a great way to share weed with a lot of people, but they’re terrible when it comes to conservation. If you really want your weed to last, pack your green into small pinch hitter or dugout. Better yet, invest in a multi-purpose vaporizer pen for a cleaner, more potent hit every time.
3. Consume edibles
The effects of eating marijuana are much more pronounced than smoking it. Though it typically takes much longer to feel its effects, once marijuana is digested into the bloodstream, the accompanying body high can last for 12 to 24 hours thus greatly reducing the desire to smoke.
4. Experiment with concentrates
Marijuana concentrates are made by extracting valuable cannabinoids from the cannabis plant, resulting in a significantly more potent product. By using concentrates (either instead of or in addition to) flower, you can reduce the amount of product needed to get high to help you conserve your stash.
5. Use a grinder
Using a grinder to break up marijuana will reduce the amount of trichomes lost to sticky fingers. Though the grinder will, no doubt, need a good cleaning to reclaim these potent crystals, that can easily be accomplished using high-proof isopropyl alcohol and plenty of time (to let the alcohol evaporate).
6. Shotgun your hit
Make a single hit last longer by sharing it with a partner. To perform a “marijuana shotgun” or “shotgun kiss”, just pass a single hit of weed between you and your partner by blowing the smoke directly into his or her mouth then allow him/her to do the same to you. This one is a great one for all of the lovebirds out there!
7. Distract yourself
For those who feel compelled to toke with the rising sun, I suggest starting the day with a distraction instead. Go for a hike, plan a trip or start a new project, just don’t pack a bowl yet! If you can put off your first toke with a little distraction, the rest will be easier to put off, too.
8. Budget your weed
In the same way you might budget your paycheck, so too should you budget your weed. You can do this by purchasing a large quantity at once then setting aside just what you will need for the week, day or outing. The trick, of course, is to refrain from touching your reserve stash until the appropriate time.
9. Request friends contribute to a smoking session
Marijuana brings friends closer together, but also has a tendency to bring scavengers out of their corners, too. When friends who invite themselves over for a smoke session notoriously leave their own at home, it may be time to respectfully decline their next invitation (unless they’re willing to contribute, that is).
10. Take a hiatus
Marijuana is awesome (I wouldn’t have this job if I didn’t think so) but that doesn’t mean it is a necessary daily activity. If you’ve found that it takes more and more just to achieve the desired high, it may be time to take a break from the ganja for a while. Depending on how often you consume, clearing marijuana out of your system could take as long as a few months, so be prepared for a few sleepless nights if you choose this option.
11. Consider strain options
Some strains are naturally more potent which means that less would be needed to achieve a desirable high, while others are less potent but generally cheaper to purchase. Depending on what your goals are, choose a strain that will get you there. If you’re looking for a strong buzz with little smoke, for example, a top-shelf strain might suit you best. “Shake shelf” strains might be a better option for those who enjoy the act of smoking and entertaining more than the high itself.
12. Grow your own
Finally, for those who would rather not sacrifice the quantity of cannabis they consume, home-grown weed might be a better option all around. Check with your respective state to see how many plants you’re allowed to grow per household. As long as proper growing restrictions are met, home growers should be able to produce ample weed for relatively little green.
Nothing is quite as sad as that last little nug in what was once a fat sack of weed, but the good news is that there are ways to stretch that last bit of weed longer. All you need is a little discipline, creative thinking and the nerve to tell your mooching friends to back off!
What do you do to conserve your weed? We’d love to hear about it.
