Virginia’s medical marijuana program is now operational. After a long and winding journey, the state began sales in October of 2020. Final regulations to establish a retail system for medical marijuana were signed into law under Senate Bill 976 by Governor Ralph Northam.

Though the initial laws for medical marijuana in the state were established in 2015 with the signing of two laws, Senate Bill 1235 and House Bill 1445, the early system was very limited, allowing only CBD and low-THC preparations.
