Recreational cannabis has been legalized in Virginia, however the law is not yet in effect. Legalization will begin in 2024. Meanwhile, Virginia’s medical program is up and running following Governor Ralph Northam's approval of Senate Bill 976 to establish a retail system for medical marijuana. After a long and winding journey, the state began sales in October of 2020.
Initial laws for medical marijuana in the state were established in 2015 with the signing of two laws, Senate Bill 1235 and House Bill 1445, but the early system was very limited, allowing only CBD and low-THC preparations.
