Washington is helping lead the way in the cannabis industry by being the 2nd state to legalize recreational marijuana in the US.

Initiative 502 was passed in 2012 which legalized recreational marijuana across the state. Starting July 1, 2016, all dispensaries were required to apply for endorsement with the Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB). This effectively eliminated medical marijuana dispensaries and allowed recreational facilities to apply for medical endorsements for their businesses. Medical cannabis was legalized under Initiative 692. Dispensaries with medical endorsement from the LCB are allowed to sell cannabis to registered medical marijuana patients at a reduced tax rate, stock products relevant to medical use, have a consultant onsite, and help patients register with the state database.
