Rhode Island became the 11th state to permit the use of medical cannabis in 2006, though compassion centers took some time to be integrated into the system, finally starting sales in 2013.

Today, the state’s expanding market recently received approval for six additional dispensaries, raising the state total to nine. Rhode Island also allows out-of-state registered medical cannabis patients to shop in Rhode Island compassion centers, and has one of the most welcoming policies of any state with reciprocity. Visitors must have a physical copy of their home-state ID as well as a physical copy of their patient card (or equivalent) with them at time of purchase.
