Yes! Non-medical cannabis was legalized nationwide throughout Canada on October 17, 2018. Adults 19 years of age and older are legally allowed to purchase, possess, consume and cultivate cannabis within the territories.

How much cannabis can I possess in the Northwest Territories?

Adults of legal age are allowed to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis in public places.

Where can I consume cannabis in the Northwest Territories?

Consumers are legally permitted to enjoy their cannabis products in the following places:

  • Private residences
  • Private property where tobacco consumption is permitted
  • Trails and roadways (when not operating a vehicle)
  • Parks (when not in use for public events)

It is strictly illegal to consume cannabis in any place where children visit frequently.

Is medical cannabis still available in the Northwest Territories?

Can I grow my own cannabis in the Northwest Territories?

Yes! Adults 19 years of age and older are legally allowed to cultivate up to 4 plants per household. All cannabis plants cultivated in NWT must be grown from legally obtained seeds and be grown indoors or in a yard located on private property.

Am I allowed to transport cannabis within the Northwest Territories?

Yes, transporting of cannabis within NWT is legal as long as the possession limit is respected. When transporting cannabis through NWT, the products must be in a closed container and completely out of reach from the driver.
