Alaska followed in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington, ambitiously becoming the third state to legalize the sale, taxation and consumption of recreational marijuana by adults 21 years of age or older.
While Alaska voted to legalize marijuana in November 2014, the measure, titled Alaska Marijuana Legalization Ballot Measure 2, was not officially implemented until February 2015. Even after implementation of the measure, recreational dispensaries did not open for another year or so. The first Alaskan recreational marijuana dispensaries opened in October 2016 and are currently serving to public with great response.
Recreational marijuana has proven fruitful for Alaska, collecting millions of dollars in tax revenue that is currently helping the state’s economy and local communities tremendously.
