Recreational cannabis sales are slated to begin January 1, 2020 when the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act officially goes into effect. The state's 55 currently licensed medical marijuana dispensaries will be authorized to begin adult-use sales on January 1 as well. In the meantime, medical marijuana dispensaries are open for business in Illinois, including the Chicago area. Patients are able to purchase an "adequate supply" of marijuana, which usually translates to 2.5 usable ounces.
