A lot of cannabis consumers prefer to smoke out of glass pieces, like pipes, bongs and dab rigs, because many believe that using glass pieces enhances flavor and offers the cleanest smoking experience, especially if you clean your glass regularly. In the past few years, cannabis glass, following on the heels of cannabis glass artist and trailblazer Bob Snodgrass, have become their own distinct art forms, and some are sold in galleries for a very high price.
Luckily, you don’t have to have a million dollars to buy a reliable and attractive glass piece. You can definitely find a creative yet sturdy piece for less than $50, though you could buy a pipe from a local head shop for around ten bucks. However, you will probably want to spend a few extra dollars to make sure that you purchase a pipe made of thick borosilicate glass. This will protect the flavor of your bud, be made of much higher quality material, and will be much harder to break.

Speaking of breaking, when it’s time to transport your glass, protecting your precious purchase should be treated the same as any other fragile item you would pack with care. Here are a few tips and tricks for transporting glass.
Invest in a Pelican Case
Even though this is not the cheapest way to transport glass, it is definitely the safest method. Just place your glass in the case and problem solved! Pelican cases can accommodate glass of all sizes, and have very reasonable prices, especially for smaller cases.
An added benefit of using a Pelican Case is its eco-friendliness. The company, which works frequently with technology companies to ship computers and other electronics, found that shipping supplies like cardboard create more than 24 million tons of waste in the U.S. alone.
The Pelican creates much less waste and reduces the need for tape and other bric-a-brac used for packing (that also generate waste). And of course, it can be reused and even re-purposed multiple times.

DIY Cases for Glass
If you decide to pass on the Pelican Case or Dime Bag, you’ll have to turn to a do-it-yourself method to transport your glass, but you’ll need a few more supplies: a box, packing paper (newspaper can work well, too, but watch out for smudges), bubble wrap, scissors, and packing tape. To keep all of your glass safe, especially if it has separate parts, you will want to wrap each of them individually:
Tips for DIY Cannabis Glass Transport
- Bubble wrap your entire piece so that no glass is showing
- Next, add packing paper around the bubble wrap layer
- Place packing paper (or old towels, newspaper, or even paper towels) in the box
- Carefully place your glass inside the box
- Cover with more packaging material, be sure to fill the interior of any openings if needed
- Secure the box with tape
The goal here is to make sure your glass piece is nice and snug in its container. There are many ways to accomplish this, so play around with it to find the method that works best for you. Or, if you want a consistent method for glass transport, go with one of the brands mentioned above! If you’re really in a pinch and want to forego packing accouterments altogether, you could always wrap your glass in clothing, or put your pipes in clean socks – although we don’t recommend these methods if other options are available.
