Weeded Out: Social Justice for Indigenous Communities and POC in the Cannabis Industry

New York, NY

Thursday, May 30, 2019

“The situation on marijuana is changing ... Now you have to answer specifics,” Who sells it? Where do they sell it? What quantity can you sell? And to come up with a full program.” - NY Governor Andrew Cuomo

Join us for an evening of presentations, discussions, and workshops on the issues of social justice and indigenous peoples rights in the cannabis industry. The event will also include tutorials and networking with other professionals.

Information will be provided on:

Status of legalization in New York and beyond;

Collaborative strategies for indigenous peoples and communities of color to create their own cannabis cooperatives and other equitable business enterprises;

Tutorials for product development and incubating cannabis businesses; and

Networking opportunities with other professionals

As of January 2019, ten states have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Over twenty states have broadly legalized cannabis for medical use, while other cannabis products, such as CBD, are already legal in many forms. In 2020, New York State is expected to change its medical marijuana laws and its overall approach to cannabis, including legalization for “recreational” use. This change will open many opportunities in a rapidly growing global industry, but knowledge about the legislative process, cannabis science, economic systems, are helpful in creating an industry that works for everyone.
