Any 420-themed party needs good music, good friends, and good weed. You’ve got the friends and herb covered, but your inner DJ is creatively blocked. After all, what’s a good music playlist to listen to stoned? It has to have a balance of cannabis classic rock, herbal hip-hop, and dope reggae.

Luckily, PotGuide’s put together a 420 2022 Playlist, including some 420 music classics and some older stuff that might be under your radar. We’re sharing a couple highlights from the full playlist below.

PotGuide’s 420 2022 Playlist Highlights

Hit play and get this party started! Smoke a joint, smoke a bong, or eat those edibles you’ve been cooking up in preparation for this fun holidaze!

Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) - The First Edition

A group of friends dressed up as the actors of the movie The Big Lebowski, man wearing grey robe with white shirt, black sunglasses, and plaid pajama bottoms, another man wearing olive green cargo vest and cargo pants with black shirt, and tan sunglasses, women wearing red wig and army green trenchcoat, and woman dressed as viking holding a trident.

“I tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high”

Our 420 2022 Playlist kicks off with this stoner classic that The Big Lebowski introduced to a new generation. Its trippy guitar riffs and psychedelic lyrics stand on their own, but once your 420 party hears the first “Yeahhhhh, Yeahhhh, Oh Yeahh!!!,” everyone will be grinning and thinking about the same part of the movie: the bowling alley dance scene. (Come to think of it, 420 is a great time for a Big Lebowski rewatch, wouldn’t you say?)

Hold It Now, Hit It - Beastie Boys

“It’s my joint/hold it now/it’s my rhyme”

Any track from License to Ill is a good party track, but for our 420 2022 Playlist, you gotta go with this classic New York Hip Hop stoner anthem about smoking weed and drinking ale. From the heavy bass beat to the party whistle to all three jumping in on the last word of every bar, this track makes you want to party like you’re wearing Adidas superstars, thick gold chains, and wayfarer shades.

Weed Party - Band of Horses

Group of friends in the living room with hardwood floors. Someone is smoking a bong, another man is smoking a bong with dark brown dreadlocks, woman sitting on a couch with legs crossed green sweater, another lady dancing with dark hair and blue plaid shirt, and a young man, wearing an orange shirt, playing a guitar.

“It's a good day to skip because/Your party's gonna come, it's come”

Every 420 playlist needs an introspective track. Weed Party is all about that bittersweet time growing up when smoking weed and feeling lost seemed like all you and your friends did. Now you’re at a 420 party with your friends and things are going well, so celebrate the progress.

Blueberry Yum Yum - Ludacris

“Get your lighters, roll that sticky, let's get higher/Got that blueberry yum yum and it's that fire”

When you find a strain that hits just right, you can hype it up for days. If you’re Ludacris, you write a whole song about it. Good 420 music covers all aspects of smokin’ herb, and this 420 2022 Playlist track covers one of the most important: sharing the love for your favorite tasty, glittery, fire strain that gets you higher than the rest and in Ludacris’s case, that’s Blueberry.

Pass that Dutch - Missy Elliott

A hand with a few silver rings, with a white stone in the center of one, that is holding a blunt out that has just been recently lit. The woman is blurred in the background but she has purple hair and a winter coat on.

“Come on pass the dutch baby!/Shake-shake shake ya stuff ladies!”

If it’s time to pump the energy up at your 420 party, there’s no better choice than cranking some Missy Elliot on our 420 2022 Playlist. With a booming bass line, driving clap track, and sick samples, this track will get the heads of everyone in the room bopping. 420 doesn’t have to be just couch time with friends. You heard Missy. Hit that dutch, pass it, then get up and start shaking your stuff.

420 (Blaze Up) - Snoop Dogg, Devin the Dude, Wiz Khalifa, DJ Battlecat

“Today’s the day to blaze up/So go ahead and put your J’s up”

Any good 420 music mix will have a blend of songs hinting at smoking weed, and songs that ain’t subtle about it at all. This track on our 420 2022 Playlist is the second one. It’s three of the most famous rappers who smoke weed singing about their love of the weed-smoking holiday. Whether blatant or not, it’s still a bomb track that will leave pot smoke wafting out of your speakers.

Smoke Two Joints - The Toyes

A male and female are leaning into each other to light each of their joints. They are both wearing tan overalls with blue and red thermals underneath. There is a laptop in front of them.

“Hard work good, and hard work fine, but first take care of head”

Nearly every weed-loving Millenial and Zoomer has heard Sublime’s “Smoke Two Joints,” so why not go for the original instead? This 420 music should be standard on any 420 2022 playlist as a fun, reggae-heavy ode to getting blazed enough to get through your day (but maybe consider a T break if two joints is your standard.)

Illegal Smile - John Prine

“And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile/It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while”

This cheeky, laid-back folk country classic reminds us why the 420 holiday (and political organizing) continues to matter. From prohibition’s racist origins, the law has continued to demonize a cheap, mostly harmless way to take the edge off and have some fun. When it comes up on your 4/20 2022 Playlist, feel free to sway with your friends and belt out the chorus “Won’t you please tell the man, I didn’t kill anyone/No, I’m just trying to have me some fun.”

High by the Beach - Lana Del Rey

This trip-hop inspired track plays best at the tail end of any 420 2022 playlist. When you’ve blazed up a tasty indica and everyone’s feeling the vibe, this song reminds you to take in the moment. For all the work we put into the daily grind, all any of us want to do is get stoned and feel at peace in our favorite spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s The Best Song to Listen to When You’re High?

It depends on the experience you’re looking for. Weed can make an old favorite sound new, help you appreciate complex musical arrangements, or it can get you feeling the vibe of a beat-heavy track.

Should You Listen to Music When High?

Definitely. If it’s hitting just right, listening to good music when high is one of the most enjoyable and profound experiences you can have.

What Does Music Sound Like When High?

It all depends, but many people would say that music just sounds better. The lyrics are more meaningful, the music is more pleasurable, and the beats are more exciting. Some parts of a song may stand out to you like you’re hearing them for the first time. There’s really only one way to find out…

Is Sativa or Indica Better for Listening to Music?

It all depends on the strain. If you’re listening to music on your stereo or over headphones, you might want a strain that’s going to be relaxing, but clear-headed enough to let the music carry your mind with it. If you’re listening to live music, you could want something more uplifting and psychedelic that enhances the performance. It’s best to ask your budtender what strains go best with whichever musical experience you’re planning to have.
