This winter, we documented the varying recreational marijuana costs in Colorado. In our last report for Fall 2015, we randomly surveyed 25 recreational stores in the greater Denver area and 10 retail marijuana stores along 1-70 corridor in the mountains.
We did our best to average the prices of flower per store, disregarding the most expensive and least expensive strains while focusing on the overall averages. Note that many stores offer high and low grade strains, which can be 50% +/- of the average cost.
After analyzing the data for winter 2015/2016 against previous research we’ve seen a slight 5% decrease in prices as compared to the report we completed in fall 2015.
We believe that these price shifts could be associated with one of the following reasons:
First, we’ve noticed a continued increase in dispensary openings across the state. As a result, the competition factor comes into play which forces stores to offer lower-priced products to remain top of mind for potential buyers.
Another hypothesis correlates to Colorado’s popular winter tourism season, which brings in an estimated 75 million travelers to the state in a few short months. With this seasonal influx of tourism dollars, dispensaries entice travelers to their businesses with competitively low pricing.
Lastly, we believe that the slight decrease in prices may have fluctuated due to the continued price stabilization within the industry. As companies compete to remain prevalent and as the industry continues to mature, we’re predicting minimal fluctuations in months to come.
