420 Culture

It's summertime and the living is certainly easy in Colorado. Not only can we grow our own marijuana, but we can purchase some of the best strains of cannabis seven days a week at local dispensaries. Of course, in order to have the best 420-friendly summer possible, we'll need to find just the right strains for the season.

Here are 10 of the best strains of marijuana for the summer. Each has been carefully selected for its light, often fruity flavors and perfect buzz for the most popular summertime activities.

Jilly Bean

Known for its sweet, tangy flavor and uplifting buzz, Jilly Bean is a popular choice for summer sessions. The smooth smoke and sweet finish leads to a very sociable (and perhaps a bit giggly), Sativa-dominant high followed by a relaxing indica finish. If you'll be smoking this one during the day, be sure to stay active if you want to stave off your afternoon nap.

Super Lemon Haze

This Lemon Skunk and Super Silver Haze cross is perfect for an active day of hiking or sightseeing. It offers a clear-headed cerebral high along with a powerful feeling of euphoria making it a great strain for parties or other social situations, as well. It is aptly named for its strong citrus flavor which closely mimics the popular Lemonhead candies.

Bubba Kush

This flavorful strain is ideal for lazy evenings camping (in that it will provide a sound sleep) or recovering from last night's festivities thanks to its powerful body high. It features a sweet, earthy flavor and bright green nugs that will ease you from a focused cerebral high to a powerful body buzz. With Bubba Kush, you can have it all: a great flavor, a powerful head high and a very relaxing finish.

G13

This strain is popular around the rumor mill. Though it's official origins are unknown, it is believed to have originated in a secret, government-funded grow house, born of some of the best strains from around the world. The resulting strain features a sweet, earthy flavor accompanied by a very relaxed body high (without being too heavy or soporific). This strain is especially good for a relaxing day with friends where you will no doubt be ecstatic about the meaning of life.

Strawberry Cough

Strawberry Cough is a sativa strain known for its sweet, strawberry-flavored smoke and happy, energetic high. Though the strain can be a bit harsh on the inhale, the quick high and well-balanced feeling of euphoria makes Strawberry Cough one of the most popular strains in Colorado. It is ideal for active adventurers as it will inspire movement and lively conversation. Consider using it at a fair or golf tournament.

Pineapple Express: Pineapple Express is a sativa-dominant hybrid that got its name from its parent strains, Hawaiian and Trainwreck. The flavor is very fruity and a bit woody, with hints of both pine and cedar. This is a fast-acting, energetic high that can last for multiple hours. This is a great strain to take to concerts or other outdoor events.

Grape Ape

Grape Ape tends to stick out among the rest thanks to it's deep purple hue and trichome-covered buds. As the name suggests, this strain is very sweet with a strong grape flavor. It provides a mellow cerebral high and relaxing body high. Grape Ape is ideal for relieving pain, stress and anxiety. This strain is recommended for spa days or a lazy evening at home.

Agent Orange

Agent Orange is most notable for its distinct citrus flavor and aroma. Freshly-ground buds feature a very pungent orange scent thanks to its parent strain Orange Velvet, and a sweet flavor on the exhale because of its other parent strain, Jack the Ripper. The resulting high is a very uplifting, cerebral high with little accompanying body high, making this the perfect strain for daytime activities like shopping or yoga.

Green Crack

Shady name aside, this strain is a big hit in the summer thanks to its long-lasting energetic high (which is purely marijuana, I swear). It features a sweet, tangy flavor and bright green, dense buds. Though it may take a few minutes to really set in, once it does, this award-winning strain will keep users lifted and focused making it an ideal strain for creative endeavors like painting or cooking class.

Death Star

Death Star is a personal favorite of mine with an earthy flavor and a skunk smell that cannot be beat. The high is mellow and relaxing without being too heavy, and the euphoric sensations make everything around so much better! It is recommended for mellow evenings at home watching Netflix or a night under the stars with a special someone.

Oh, how I love Summer; the days are longer, the to-do list is shorter and there is never a shortage of fun activities to be had. In Colorado, all of these great things can be so much better just by adding a little weed into the mix.
