Recreational cannabis has been legalized in Virginia under SB 1406. Personal possession and home cultivation are legal in the state as of July 1, 2021. Further measures, including retail, are planned to be enacted in 2024. Virginia’s medical program is currently up and running following Governor Ralph Northam's approval of Senate Bill 976. After a long and winding journey, the state began medical sales in October of 2020.

Initial laws for medical marijuana in the state were established in 2015 with the signing of two laws, Senate Bill 1235 and House Bill 1445, but the early system was very limited, allowing only CBD and low-THC preparations.
