Bennington, Vermont is known most widely for the Bennington Battle Monument, commemorating the historic Battle of Bennington. The altercation is considered a turning point of the Revolutionary War. Subsequently, August 16 is a legal holiday in Vermont, known as Bennington Battle Day. The battle of Bennington actually took place 10 miles from the monument, technically in the state of New York. However, the monument lies on the site of the stockade of weapons and provisions sought by British forces. There’s more to Bennington than monuments, though. It is the site of the yearly Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East, and has been a mainstay in the town since 1946.
