Rhode Island was the 19th state to legalize recreational cannabis. The state passed identical legalization bills through the house and senate, Rhode Island House Bill 7593 and Rhode Island Senate Bill 2430, which Governor Governor Daniel McKee singed into law on May 25, 2022.

Rhode Island became the 11th state to permit the use of medical cannabis in 2006, though compassion centers took some time to be integrated into the system, finally starting sales in 2013. Rhode Island also allows out-of-state registered medical cannabis patients to shop in Rhode Island compassion centers, and has one of the most welcoming policies of any state with reciprocity. Visitors must have a physical copy of their home-state ID as well as a physical copy of their patient card (or equivalent) with them at time of purchase.
